Part disciplined craftsman, part warehouser of beautiful things, I've learned that a well upholstered piece of furniture, like a great bag, repays you time and time again

Model Skin

It all got a bit Patrick Lichfield and Marsha Hunt here last week, when photographer Nick Tucker had free reign of the flat for a fashion shoot.

Nick shot my wedding, documentary style, earlier this year, so when he got back in touch to say he really rather liked the high ceilings and light, and could he come back with a six foot black model, I of course said yes, keen to know what was he up to.

It had been a while since I’d hung around a shoot without a proper role (last time was with Sean Penn and Naomi Watts in New York, but that’s a whole different story) and I’m not very good at it. I didn’t spend four years loading film in the dark and crafting meticulous labels for camera truck contents to stand around doing nothing when a shoot happens in my own sitting room.

Turns out, I’m also somewhat of a prude, so when Issy Love, our afro sporting goddess model and muse, started dispensing with more and more of her clothes, I donned my art director hat and started pulling out pieces of upholstery and bag leather from my stock and wrapping her back up, Flintstone style.

Nick didn’t seem to mind and even sportingly suggested I add my latest handbag design in a few shots, which Issy modelled delectably.

And if you like the bag… stay tuned for my workshop this autumn at Homemade London, where I’ll be showing you how to make it. It’s a 1 day course in which you’ll learn pattern cutting skills and make your own bag from limited edition high lux leathers,¬†complete with solid brass hardware. Sunday 27th October 2013…booking opens soon.
